Celebrating 50 Years of Impact
2025 marks a significant milestone: the 50th anniversary of AASE as a national organisation. Since
our inaugural meeting in June 1975, we have witnessed transformative educational and policy
initiatives—both nationally and globally—that have fundamentally improved access, participation, and
achievement for learners with disability. We have come a long way since 1975 in recognising
individuals with disability and more so acknowledging the importance of focus, access, understanding,
and skills to ensure that all students and in particular students with disability, are supported to learn
and achieve in all educational settings to their highest potential.
Adapting to Meet Member Needs
Throughout our 50-year history, AASE has maintained a consistent national presence while adapting
how we serve our members. Technology has revolutionised our approach to professional learning,
enabling us to reach educators in regional, rural, and remote areas through online delivery. Many of
you attended last night's excellent professional learning session with Dr. Siobhan Lamb—a perfect
example of how we're expanding access to high-quality professional development. Likewise, we
remain committed to our well-attended annual national conference, which rotates across states and
territories.
However, our chapter structure has faced challenges. In 2025, the difficult decision to close chapters
was made by Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the ACT. Other chapters have also shared the
struggle to maintain active committees. These changes have prompted us to strengthen our national
focus. As a reflection of this, the 2026 national conference, much like our 2024 conference in
Adelaide, is being organised by representatives from across the country. Please remember, every
AASE member, regardless of location, is a valued member of the national organisation and we invite
your contribution at that level.
